Frequently Asked Questions
1- What is KN95 masks?
KN95 mask is a kind of filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) that is subject to 2626-2006 standards in China. According to the filtration performance, FFR have two categories, which are KN and KP. KN mask can filter non-oil based particles, while KP mask adapts to both types. The number following the letter means the filtration efficiency.
An authentic KN95 mask can help reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particulate hazards, which is demonstrate to be equivalent to US NIOSH N95 and European FFP2 respirators.
2- What is authorized KN95 masks?
On April 3, 2020, the FDA issued an umbrella EUA for certain filtering face-piece respirators (FFRs) that are manufactured in China and are not approved by the National Institutes of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
As mentioned in CDC's strategies for optimizing respirator supply, other countries approve respirators according to country-specific standards. These devices are evaluated using methods similar to those used by NIOSH and are still expected to provide adequate protection for healthcare personnel. Non-NIOSH-approved FFRs manufactured in China that have been confirmed by FDA to meet the criteria under the EUA are included below in Appendix A.
3- Can authorized respirators be used for health care workers?
Respirators authorized under this EUA are personal protective equipment that are intended for use by health care personnel in healthcare settings according to CDC's recommendations.
4- What is N95 masks?
In the U.S., respirators are tested and certified by the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH tests and certifies respirators based on their physical and performance characteristics, including filtration efficiency.
For example, N95-rated filtering facepiece respirators have a filtration efficiency of at least 95% against non-oily particles when tested using the NIOSH criteria. NIOSH approved respirators can be checked on CDC website.
5- How long can these masks be used?
4-6 hours when visiting crowded places. One day for normal daily work. 2-4 days when less contacting with people, keep properly.
